Sun or light damaged and aging skin is characterized by thinning of the epidermis and dermis and is associated with a decrease in collagen levels resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, less tone, and texture changes. Treatment of this sun damaged, thin skin is based on causing controlled injury to the dermis, resulting in stimulation of the body’s natural healing system or “neocollagenesis”. Damage to the dermis results in the stimulation of various enzymes, such as elastin, collagenase, and stem cells. These all work together and are responsible for the removal of old tissue and the creation of new dermal tissue. Traditionally, laser-based technologies are used to resurface the skin, but fractional RF works to rebuild the subsurface or foundation of the skin.
